Shmoop!

Shmoop is a great new website aimed at helping students with their English and U.S. History assignments. The site has very relevant discussions of the themes of classic books, great summaries of periods and events in history, links to helpful websites, printable cramsheets, and even tools to get students started on their essays. The organization and look of the site is very student-friendly, and everything is free! To find out more, take the Tour de Shmoop. I highly recommend this site. It is not as thorough as some of our databases, but they are adding new content all the time. Also, it is aimed at a teen audience and is written in a very engaging way.

Scholarship Money

This link was forwarded to me from the head of the Community Involvement Network. This is the same group that sends me the posters about health information meetings and similar things, that I then generally send to you to have posted. I'm not familiar with the online journal ARA Lifestyle, but the scholarship program discussed appears legitimate.

Reference Info

There has been a patron in Delaware County that has been accessing Ref.USA beyond normal research use. Because of this Helen has sent e-mails regarding the changes to access the database from home. Will fax the new format to UDM & UDP.

Hello, again,
ReferenceUSA has been deleted from the proxy server. From now on, remote access for ReferenceUSA will be handled by the vendor itself; customers will authenticate themselves on a ReferenceUSA page simply by typing in their library barcode number. ReferenceUSA has 25918 on file for us, and it works fine from where I sit.

I could not do a print screen from our off-network computer to show you the authentication page, so I'm going to fax a print-out to you.

Feel free to question or comment. Thanks!

Hello, everyone,
If all goes well, we will have a new way for customers to access ReferenceUSA remotely, within the hour. There may be a slight break in access while we work on this.
Thanks; apologies for the inconvenience.

Web addresses

Add this link to your favorites -

This is a nifty way to take those big long URLs (web addresses), and turn them into short, easy to work with addresses.
For example, someone wants the link to information about the Earned Income Tax Credit on the IRS web site. You can tell them to go to www.irs.gov and look for the link. Or you can give them the link
Or you can go to tinyurl, paste address into the Make it Tiny box and give them
This especially useful for emails or other text forms where the link could get broken by inaccurate text wrapping.
Try it yourself.
