Clean Teen Reads

I posted this on the teen blog last week, and am duplicating it here because Becky had a reference question about the topic last night. These sites address mainstream middle grade and young adult novels that do not have what I call "content." That is, teen books people can read without being surprised by words, actions, and situations that they find inappropriate. The sites were originally compiled by librarians on the YALSA-BK listserv, and I selected the ones I thought were most helpful. Of course, it's not a guarantee that no one will get offended anyway, but at least it's a starting point!

Common Sense Media
This website compiles age ratings and reviews on books, movies, video games and more.

Homespun Light
This blog lists "clean reads" for everyone from babies through high school. Click on the links to the right to search specific genres or levels.

Lamplighter Award
This is an award program that engages middle school students to read and vote on "wholesome and uplifting mainstream books." See this year's list and download their lists from previous years.

Marshall District Library's Clean Reads List
An annotated list for teens of " books that don't offend."

Books that Don't Make You Blush
A list of "clean reads" assembled YALSA in 2006.
